Wood-pressed from black sesame seeds, unrefined and unbleached. Naturally rich in sesamin and sesamol. Known regionally as nallennai, til oil, or marachekku ennai. FSSAI-certified.
Regional Names
Known across India by several names for the same traditional oil: nallennai (Tamil), til oil (Hindi/generic), nuvvula nune (Telugu), ellenna (Malayalam), and marachekku ennai when the wood-press method is emphasised. This page covers all of them — they refer to the same wood-pressed black sesame oil.
How It’s Made
Extracted from dry black sesame seeds using a traditional wooden press at room temperature — no added heat, hexane, or bleaching. A small amount of palm jaggery is added during extraction to balance sesame’s naturally strong, slightly bitter taste, a traditional step that gives the oil its characteristic smoothness.
Composition
Gingelly (sesame) oil is naturally rich in sesamin and sesamol, two compounds unique to sesame seeds that are retained because the oil is unrefined and minimally processed.
Aroma, Taste & Texture
Golden brown to dark brown in colour, with a naturally nutty aroma balanced by the palm jaggery used in extraction. Adds depth to tempering, marinades, and traditional South Indian dishes.
Smoke Point
Approximately 160–177°C for unrefined sesame oil — suited to sautéing, tempering, and moderate-heat cooking rather than high-heat deep frying.
Traditional & Culinary Uses
Used in pickles, rice dishes, chutneys, and gravies across South Indian and broader Asian cooking. Also used externally in traditional oil-massage and hair-oiling routines, strictly as external, cosmetic use — not to treat any medical condition.
