First clue – It is a Kharif crop that varies from light red to dark grey.

Second clue – It is one of the oldest crops in India, as ancient as 3000 years.

The third and final clue – It is known by multiple names like Indian Cow Grass, Rice grass, etc.

Any guesses? It is none other than the Kodo Millet that we are talking about.

Kodo Millet has always been primarily used as a substitute for rice or in the form of porridge. Sounds very boring right? But it does not have to be boring actually. Introducing the very yummy, delectable, and healthy noodles option – Kodo Millet Noodles.

About Kodo Millet

Want to hear a scary word?

Paspalum scrobiculatum. This is the scientific name of Kodo Millet, a plant that is grown in India and also in countries like Nepal, Vietnam, Africa. In Southern India, they are known as Varaku or Koovaraku.

Kodo Millet is a very flexible crop in the sense that it can grow in poor and very fertile soils. It also grows in any soil type like alluvial, grainy, loamy, sandy, etc. The processing of Kodo Millets can however be a tedious task, owing to the several layers of seed coat that they have.

Despite being a ‘low-risk’ crop, the cultivation of Kodo Millet has seen a drastic reduction owing to the high popularity of grains like rice and wheat. Kodo Millet is healthier than these two grains as it is more fibrous and gluten-free.

They also have a shorter growth period and gives the largest yield per area. From one hectare, 450-900 kg of grains can be cultivated. Isn’t that a hell of a lot of food?
