About Kumbakonam Degree Coffee Powder
Did you know that high-quality coffee was called “Degree coffee” in South India? In the olden days, milk that was certified as pure with the help of a lactometer was called “Degree milk”, and the coffee that was prepared with milk became popular as Degree coffee.
The coffee which is decoction for the first time before mixing with milk was known as “First degree coffee” because it was very strong and flavourful. Unlike “Second and Third-degree coffee” that undergoes decoction more than one time.
It is said that the first-degree coffee was the effluent’s cup of tea, while the second and third-degree coffee was that of the common man’s. Often this kind of coffee also had a certain amount of chicory in it.
Arabica varieties of coffee beans are high in taste and flavor, so it’s the top choice of beans for the Kumbakonam degree/filter coffee.
Before getting into exploring the possible benefits and effects of coffee beans, let us take a look at the nutritional value possessed by 100 grams of roasted coffee beans.
The remaining nutrients present in coffee beans are calcium, thiamine, niacin, phosphorus, copper, iron, riboflavin, magnesium, and zinc.

How to make Kumbakonam degree coffee powder at Home?
- For making a perfect decoction, choose the correct filter size, depending on the cups of coffee required. In this case, add three to four heaped teaspoons of coffee powder to the perforated upper part. I roughly calculated 1 and ½ teaspoons for a person.
- Adding coffee powder, press gently with the plate with the handle. I use my fingers to do this to keep the pressure. If you press too loose, then the water gets through so fast and the decoction won’t be strong. It will be much diluted.
- The heat is required to fill the filter and let it start to boil. Add it to the filter and fill it up to the rim and close immediately with the lid.
- Wait for 15 minutes – ½ hour. Collect the first-degree decoction and keep covered. If you want, you can again add hot water and brew a second time.
- Boil milk well, and froth the milk with sugar once.
- Add the required amount of decoction and froth well.
